If you've never been on a reformer, the machine can look a little intimidating. Springs, straps, a carriage that slides back and forth. Most people feel that way walking into our Richland studio for the first time, and most of them find it easier to pick up than they expected. Here's what your first class actually looks like, so you can walk in feeling ready.
Start with Reformer Pilates Foundations
Foundations is our beginner class, and it's where we suggest everyone starts, even if you've done mat Pilates or other workouts for years. Your instructor will show you how the reformer works: setting the springs, getting on and off the carriage safely, and where your hands and feet go. From there you'll work on alignment, core control and building strength from the ground up.
Once Foundations feels comfortable, you can move into Reformer Flow, which links movements together at a steadier pace, or Reformer Sculpt, which adds more strength work. There's no set number of beginner classes you have to take first. Most people can tell when they're ready, and your instructor will give you an honest opinion if you ask. You can read more about each format on our Richland reformer Pilates page.
What to wear
Wear fitted clothes you can move in, like leggings or bike shorts and a top that won't slide up when you're lying down. Baggy shirts and loose shorts tend to get in the way of the straps and springs.
Grip socks are required on the reformer. They keep your feet from slipping on the footbar and platform. If you don't have a pair, no problem. You can grab some at the front desk when you check in. A water bottle is a good idea too.
Get there 10 to 15 minutes early
For your first visit, plan to arrive 10 to 15 minutes before class. That gives you time to check in, put your things away and meet your instructor. Let them know it's your first time, and mention any injuries or anything that's been bothering you so they can adjust the moves for you.
Finding us and parking
We're at 5069 Ava Way, Suite 203, in Badger Heights Plaza in Badger Mountain South. If you're coming from Kennewick or West Richland, it's about a 10 minute drive. There's plenty of parking all around the building, and none of it is reserved for specific businesses, so any open spot works.
What the 50 minutes feel like
Every class runs 50 minutes, and we keep them small on purpose. Your instructor can actually see you, correct your form and offer a modification if something doesn't feel right. Expect it to be harder than it looks. Reformer Pilates is low impact and easy on your joints, but the springs add resistance, and plenty of first timers feel it in their core and legs the next day.
You won't be the only beginner in the room, and nobody is watching you. Go at your own pace, rest when you need to, and ask questions.
After your first class
Most people leave feeling worked and energized at the same time. A little soreness for a day or two is normal, especially in your core, glutes and inner thighs. Drink water, keep moving, and come back when you're ready.
If you want to keep going, you can drop in with a single class or choose a monthly membership with 4, 8 or 12 classes. Mat Only memberships cover mat Pilates, barre and yoga, and Reformer + Mat memberships include everything. Current prices are on our Richland page.
